- B. GALBRAITH, NOTED CYCLIST, DIES AT MILTON
Bartram Gallbraith, 70, owner and manager of the Bartram Hotel, Broadway, Milton, died this morning at 6:45 o’clock in his quarters at the hotel, following a heart attack suffered Friday, at which time he became bedfast. Mr. Galbraith had been In failing health for several months.
He was born in Milton, October 25, 1864, son of the late William B. and Mary A. Galbraith, and lived there his entire life. He attended the Milton schools, during which time he was a newsboy, after which he established a news stand at Front and Broadway. In 1909 he purchased what is now the Bartram Hotel building and moved his news stand adjacent to the property.
Mr. Galbraith was well known in Milton and the surrounding community as an enthusiastic cyclist, and for years rode a star-wheel bicycle in all Milton parades dressed in the costume of Uncle Sam. He was a member of the Century Wheelmen's Club, of Philadelphia and during the convention last year had as his guest at the dinner meeting John Cummings, Philadelphia newspaperman.
Besides his activities which included participation in entertainment at the Milton and other fair grounds, he traveled all over the United States on his bicycle, taking part in races on the West Coast, in New York City and many southern states, and was a national figure in cycling forty years ago.
He was a charter member of the Milton Presbyterian Church, the Odd Fellows and a member of the Modern Woodmen, as well as the Milton Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are an adopted daughter, Lauretta Galbraith, with the WAC at Des Moines, Iowa: a sister, Miss Maude Galbraith, who lives at the hotel, and a brother, Albert C., of New York City.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Dale E. Ranck Funeral Parlor, Milton with interment in Harmony cemetery.
