    Biography 1900  [1
    • Thomas was known as Thomas Murray Jr. to distinguish him from his cousin, Thomas, son of Colonel James Murray who was some years his senior. He died Aug 26 1823 in his 53rd year. He was married to Charity Arbour, who died June 21 1850 in her 78th year. Samuel McMahan, Esq., in his "History" says Thomas Murray Jr. was above mediocrity, well educated, of superior talent and of social habits. He had the confidence of the people as was shown by his being elected a member of the House of Representatives in 1813, and the next year was elected to the State Senate, and in 1820 he was elected a member of the 17th Congress. Upon the expiration of his first term in Congress he declined a renomination on account of failing health, and died the following year. He was married in the early years of his life to Miss Charity Arbour, a well cultured young woman but who, in her young girlhood days had some dangerous experiences with the Indians and was frequently obliged to flee to Fort Augusta for protection.

Thomas and Charity were the parents of nine children, five sons and four daughters as follows: Mary, John F, William, Hannah, Joseph Arbour, Nancy, James, Thomas and Margaret. Here as a tribute of respect to the memory of the above named Nancy (Ann) Murray, I wish to place on record that she was the faithful Sabbath school teacher of the writer of this narrative, to whom, in his early boyhood days, she gave some useful religious instruction, which has never been obliterated.

Miss Hannah was also a devoted teacher in the same school, and the two sisters with other godly women that might be mentioned so conducted the school as to leave behind them after their work was done, a record that might well be envied by others.

Thomas, the youngest son, was educated at the Milton Academy under the care of that fine classical scholar and instructor the Rev. David Kirkpatrick, and studied medicine under the late Dr. James S. Dougal, of Milton, and Dr. Van Valzah of Lewisburg, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and subsequently practiced medicine in Westmoreland and Indiana counties, Penna. Thomas Murray Jr. was the immediate successor in the State Assembly and Senate, and then in Congress, of John Murray of the Swatara family, who removed from Dauphin to Northumberland county and settled on a farm near to the Chillisquaque creek, and in the neighborhood of the Murrays who came there in 1769.
