    Biography
    • THOMAS W. MECKLY, M.D.

Biographical sketch by Capt. P. D. Bricker.

Thomas W. Meckly, M.D., the subject of this brief sketch, was the son of Dr. John Meckly, late of Milton, Pa., being born at that place in the year 1840.

He died at his residence in Jersey Shore, on Sunday morning, February 2, 1890, from the effects of a disease contracted in the naval service during the late Civil War, and was a sufferer many years from this affliction, yet continued in active practice until about three weeks ago, when he was compelled to yield to its unrelenting grasp. He leaves a wife, a son and two daughters, to mourn his untimely death, while his loss is keenly felt by a sympathizing community.

He possessed a good education, being one of the many prominent persons who received their literary training at the old "Milton Academy."

In 1861 he graduated with honor at the medical department of the Pennsylvania College, and possessing that spirit of patriotism, which impelled so many of our young men to sacrifice their health and lives for the sake of their imperiled country. he enlisted in the army. Within a few months after he graduated he was appointed a surgeon on one of the Corpes lines of clipper ships then running to Europe. Subsequently he was appointed to the medical corps, United States Army and assigned by orders to the Sixth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, serving in the Forty-ninth Regiment, Pennsylvania, and the Forty-ninth Regiment, New York Volunteers, going through the Peninsular campaign, and up to the battle of Antietam, after which battle he resigned to accept an appointment in the navy.

Dr. Meckly in the summer of 1868, located in Jersey Shore, where he practiced his profession continuously with the exception of two years while in Lock Haven. Dr. Meckly had a natural talent for his profession and possessing the advantages of the training of his father, who was an able and skillful practitioner, and also deriving great benefit from his army and navy experiences, soon placed him in the foremost rank of eminent and skillful surgeons and physicians.

His skill in surgery of all kinds, especially of the eye and ear, performing operations of a wonderful character with successful results, gave him a wide and well known reputation.

Dr. Meckly, like his father, was a man whose mind was of the most decided type, his tastes were of a high order, and his likes and dislikes very pronounced. He was true to his convictions and followed them regardless of consequences. Expediency or policy exerted no influence over either his thoughts or actions. He was quiet in his demeanor and was averse to display of any kind. He was very congenial in speech and companionable to a high degree. He was a liberal man and no one who ever applied to him for aid was turned away empty; he was a true friend, a devoted husband and a kind, indulgent parent. His memory will ever remain stamped upon the minds of our people, not only as a modest, unassuming man and citizen, but as an honorable, skillful and eminent physician.
